Swimming with Turtles

Swimming with turtles in Zanzibar is one among the unforgettable experiences that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. It is a magical adventure that allows you to get up close and personal with these gentle creatures. Turtles are known for their curious and playful nature, and they often approach swimmers to say hello.

There are several locations in Zanzibar where you can spot the turtles, but when it comes to swimming with them, there is only one place called Baraka Natural Aquarium in Nungwi beach. One of the most popular spots for the turtles in Zanzibar. Here, visitors can feed and swim with the turtles in their sanctuary.

Another popular location is Mnarani Turtles Conservation Pond, which is close to Baraka aquarium. This is a non-profit organisation which was established as a response to the declining numbers of the sea turtles. Here, visitors will not swim with the turtles, instead they will feed them and have a short tour to learn about the biology and behaviour of sea turtles, as well as the conservation efforts being made to protect them.

Other places you can spot turtles while snorkelling are at Mnemba Island reefs, Chumbe Island reefs, Nungwi Beach, Kendwa and many other marine areas of Zanzibar Island.
